First read. All the stuff you can. Books, plays, everything. There is nothing worse than an ignorant actor. Mastering of ideas is it begins, for you are the transmitter of culture. It’s a big job if taken seriously. In order to make it you also have to be versatile. It is not enough to just be pretty or just be an actor. That is a very small group of people who you see on TV and Film. There are many talented people, more talented than many in the pictures, working as theater actors who have never or will never care to or get a chance to be in a picture. Also think about where you want to be. If you want to be in film go that direction, though working in theatre is a great place to start. There is nothing like mastering your fears in live theatre. You learn so much about thinking on your feet and versatility. You must have many skills and cultivate all of them. I used to be an actor and I had no problems getting jobs. I was one of the lucky ones. But to make ends meet I would stay for lighting hangs, work with the sound engineers, and I have even done some directing. Know I am going to get my masters in Anthropology. I got tired of that life. My others skills though allowed me to make a great living for a theater person and know while I am in school full time I do lighting designs which helps me pay for school. Start by learning an instrument. The piano is vestal and you don't have to be afraid of it. Just have fun with it. Even if you don't turn out to be a Mozart you can pick your way through a song you are learning. Learn to pantomime. You don't have to be a mime or anything but it is the foundation for expressing the moment. The moment is the most important element in acting, many young people believe it is the lines. This is not true. Take as many chances as you deem necessary. Take all parts even if they are small and you have done a lot of theater. It teaches you a lot to do all sorts of roles and people will respect you. Have a good work ethic, many talented people don't get called back, and many untalented people get their parts manly because they are more reliable. And most of all have fun.
Good Luck.
P

P.S. Don't get your degree in Theater. It is a waste of time. Learn something else. Theater degress are for people who didn't know that is what they wanted to do with themselves until they got to school or have no talent in the first place and need a place to start. Learn somting else that you may not know a lot about. You can get work in theater and film easy if you work hard and are persitant. Try out. Don't Stop

Local and school plays, take classes in dance(especially ballet and jazz), music, and acting, and maybe sports if your athleticly inclined. Also read as many acting books as you can as well as plays, both classical(written before 1850) and contemporary(written after 1850). Also, when you get to high school, do anything you can to build up a solid resume. Arts(theater, music, dance, fine arts) classes and a foreign language or two are extremely helpful. If you still want to become an actor when it comes time to apply to colleges, you would apply to BFA programs in Acting. These require and audition, and the more prestigious the school, the more selective they will be.

Try out for community theatres in your area. They usually have a young adult production in the summer. Read plays to get a feel for the language. Memorize monologues and work on them at home. Watch the films of Marlon Brando.

Try out for local plays. After you get a little recognition, go to an acting school, or college that supports it. After that, look for job openings and you should be on your way. Just stick with it.
