I have a graph which corresponds to pulling a spring a series of distances. The slop is positive.

Why is the slop of your graph positive, while Hooke's law has a minus sign? (F= -k x) <

The minus means that the force of the spring is opposite the direction you're pulling. Remember that F and X are vectors.

So, if x is positive for pulling on a spring, the the Force is in the opposite direction resisting.

The slope on the graph is positive because they're just using magnitudes and assuming that you know enough about springs to know the x,F direction relationship.

Good question, though.

the slope is positive as when the force applied increases the distance also increases but the negative sign in the equation is from the derivitation of hooke's law and should be ignored for calculations and when considering graphs. the minus sign accounts for the allowances in angles and direction force is applied relative to the spring. the directions of movement are opposite

The negative sign indicates that the force exerted by the spring is in direct opposition to the direction of displacement.

Hooke's regulation supplies the courting between the stress utilized to an unstretched spring and the quantity the spring is stretched whilst the stress is utilized. ( it choose no longer be a spring !!!! it relatively is any elastic fabric .......... Hook replaced into an eye fixed maker) How lots stress is require to strech a spring interior its ELASTIC cut back ........ without it permanetly deforming Hooke's regulation for springs: F = kx f = stress

minus sign is just a "negative motion" of the spring, no?
