yes, they are usually sprayed with starch and other chemicals to keep them crisp and dust free during the packing and shipping process, and you wouldn't want to expose your skin to those chemicals unless necessary.

Most bed in bag and another higher thread count sheets I got as gifts I had to wash the bed in bag sheets and also same w/higher thread count although it's much softer than the bed in bag sheets. I got both from my stepmom a set w/pillow shams, comforters and dust ruffles and from my Dad and stepmom my Dad died a little over 3 years ago. The package they came in both said to wash the sheets before you put them on your bed. In case you were wondering the higher thread count sheets are a little more expensive and higher quality.

I always wash sheets first, because I don't like the stiffness or chemical scents they often have. With blankets though, I might not wash first, since they will be between a sheet and quilt. Good luck!

I don't think you have to, but I do. I much prefer the feel of them after washing. I also wash all new towels and clothing before using them.

you don't have to, but if you have asthma, or allergies, or sensitive skin, you really should. it is not a matter of germs, but the chemicals, such as something called sizing, that i think is to repel moths, can really make you sick, headache, wheezing...ever walk in to a clothing store and immediately get a headache? that was from the sizing, and i don't mean everything is a size to small, haha
