The change in temperature causes contraction in the wood. When things get cold they tend to contract (except water). The creaking is this slight contraction, together with the weight of the house, causing the sound you hear as it moves very slightly. It's actually a good thing as it does not allow stress to build up and weaken the structure.

The house that I grew up in was almost a hundred years old and it would moan and creak and make all kinds of noises. We just got used to it. My parents told me about why it did that.

Things contract when they cool? I hear popping and creaking noises also when I turn off or turn down heater at night.

is it because the heating pipes were expanded, so when you turn down the heat they pop back into their normal size, causing a creaking sound

Try this.

Heat causes wood to expand. The floorboards have expanded and are tight to each other.

Cold causes wood to shrink. The floorboards are shrinking and changing shape, slightly, so the creaking is twofold: wood moving against wood as it changes shape; nails not fitting as tight and wood sliding on nails.
