Snakes differ from other reptiles in that they evolved to lose their legs, and some snakes, like boas, still have remnants of what used to be legs. Initially, snakes loss their legs, ears, and eyes so that they could live a life underground. However, during some point they reemerged from the ground and had to "re-evolve" their eyes and part of their ears. Some reptiles smell with their tongues, much like snakes, but most smell with their noses.
Because it's too complicated to try to form the genetic material necessary to form legs in subsequent offspring from random matings, snakes simply improved their agility in a legless form. Some snakes can literally move their belly scales so that they can "grip" the ground. Other snakes are incredibly flexible and strong and have mastered the ability to climb trees better than some "legged" animals. While others have "flattened" slightly and have taken to the water to live as strange eel-like creature that must surface for air. The constrictors have more muscle bulk per pound than most creatures on the planet. A snake that is half your weight can overpower you (a 50lb snake can overpower a 100lb person).
Snakes have had a hard road ahead of them and have somehow managed to become one of the most feared reptile, and they don't have legs, ears, or good eyesight. Any other animal may not have faired so well under the same conditions.

snakes are great reptiles. they are beautiful reptiles but need very special care. if you are planning to get a snake, you need to think that snakes mainly eat live food unless you would rather feed it dead food. another thing is that snakes have no legs!
