There are several reasons.
1. Like the first poster said, maybe they just want the two points.
2. Maybe they think it's funny to give a bad answer.
3. Maybe they really do think you asked a stupid question.
4, They don't know the answer to the question and don't want to admit there's something they don't know.

Answering another persons question, requires taking time out of your day and a few seconds of actual thought to do so. So I think it's fair to ask why would one begin the process of answering a question by sitting down and reading it, but neglect any thorough thought about it. Lazyness couldn't be an answer because they've already read it, and lack of interest couldn't be it either, because it's simpler to ignore something boring than to attempt contributing to it. So the answer to "why don't people try to answer" is that they do actually try (although fail to be constructive), but they have found your question undeserving of any answer that isn't sarcastic or truthful. Therefore why do some people care if their publicly asked questions are answered by the public?

Depends on the people. Some want the points, some have fun giving bad answers or even answers that will hurt others (unfortunately I get that a lot), some just want to get noticed, some want to spend some time...

For the most part, they do it for the points. Second, they are just displaying immature behavior. It is easier to just move on to another question they can answer, but then they miss out on 2 points, right? On this site, you have to most definitely take the bad with the good.

The people just want two points. Or they are trying to be humorous.
Try to make the question detailed, and remember that people are still going to be idiots when answering the question.

Because we want the person to know that they are misusing this site. I think I am being helpful when I tell someone they need to do their own homework.
