would the leafs be capable of winning if they were to play in the friday night beer league that i play in. i think they'd give us a good go, but we'd come back and beat them in the third period. any thoughts.

Leafs fan since the 70s but not old enough to have witnessed the Cup in '67 and yeah, this year's edition might not beat the beer leagues out here in Southern Cal. I bet the Leafs would get as far as the semis in your beer league once every decade or so.
But seriously, the problem in the bigger picture is they always get fans' hopes up early and the press and the fan base beats them up around December-February where they could use some of the points. By the time it looks bad, they'll pick it up out of desperation, miss the playoffs, and miss out on a good draft pick (if they haven't traded it away already).
My silver lining would be - I still think this team would have beat down any of those teams in the Ballard 80s. Talk about having to put a paper bag over your head.

Although your attempt at humor is lame, I've played against marginal NHLers who just showed up at our beer league (guys like Ryan Walter, Gino Odjick, etc.) and they can kick ***. It takes talent even to be a Make Belief.
