Swan Song, by Robert MacCammon. On the surface, it is a book about the aftermath of nuclear war (so its pretty cool with the missiles and then stuff blowing up and people becoming deformed and mutants...), but its actually so much more. It shows the determination of the human spirit, the innate kindness and love we have inside all of us, and the will to make our future a brighter place. Wonderful plot - real genuine characters that are totally believable - 900+ pages of wonder.
I have read this book probably 10 times and I get something else out of it each time I re-read it. Definitely check it out.
