Go down the local church and have a chat with the local holy Joe. How about one of the local hospitals or hospices.
New year is over rated though.

Stay at home. Every bar will be jam packed, and you will struggle to get served, and food and drink will be extremely expensive.

Stop in a youth hostel, you will make lots of new friends to share it with you! It is about £12 a night £20 with a meal.
