Is it worth it to buy a laptop with and HD DVD drive since the screen isn't an HD screen?

The short answer is no.

The longer answer is that as video moves to HD formats eventually you will need an HD compatible drive to view movies on your PC. This is father off than the life of your computer so don't worry about it. The only reason you would need a HD DVD now is if you have an HD monitor or TV to show it on.
