Unfortunately, there seems to be a dark fascination in the human mind for bad deeds - so if you want to be remembered for ever, you probably need to do horrific things.
If you google Adolf Hitler, you get over 3 million results. Mother Theresa gets about half that attention - and she hasn't been dead that long.
Everybody knows who Alexandre the Great, Julius Caesar and Nero were: All three were egomania-cal sociopaths obsessed with their own glory. How many people remember Hippocrates? He was the inventor of medicine.
Pick up a newspaper - somebody does something nice for someone out of the goodness of their heart. It might get mentioned at the bottom of page C3. Commit a quadruple homicide and you're guaranteed front page.
So as you can see, great things don't get you remembered. Unfortunately, people pay attention to, and remember, horrific evil deeds.

being themselves and trying to make a difference in the world. if they have loved and have been loved. if they were unselfish and willing to help others whenever, wherever, than that is the greatest thing a human can do. Look at people like Mother Theresa and Pope John Paul II. Those are people who exemplify what is the greatest thing someone can do.

I would have to say to put something into publication, write a wonderful novel, do research that discovers a cure for some horrible disease. Also, sometimes the smallest gesture will be remembered simply because of the place it comes from. The Human Heart. :)
sorry, am I being too schmatzy???

Do something meaningful and then get your body cast in bronze and then have it hosted on a high column in Trafalgar Aquare.
First of all bring peace and good will to all men. You will be remembered for ever not just thousands or millions of years.

Fleming discovered penicillin and his name will always come up because it was the start of antibiotics. Maybe being remembered for thousands of years might not be that desirable a thing though, in view of what you have to do to achieve it. Two names spring to mind: Jesus Christ, obviously (whether or aye he was the Son of God ) and Pontius Pilate. One is remembered for His courage and the other for his lack of it.

Not much really. We are still reading the writings of Marcus Aurelius, 2,000 years after his death, but who thinks of him at all? Hitler was a monumental b*****d but he'll be forgotten one day, or treated like Attilla the Hun - just a footnote in history. Just make someone happy here and now and they'll remember you for ever. Much better and nicer idea!

Unfortunately, it seems that the only thing that is remembered for the long term is an evil deed. We will always remember Hitler, Genghis Khan, Napoleon, and a host of serial killers(too many to name). But Hardly anyone will remember the good things that people do, and who did them.
Being notorious is the only way to be remembered, and it's very very sad.
