excellent to see kalasyra - she's been pretty inactive for a while, but when she does answer, they're always good answers.
on to the question - final fantasy VII is NOT the best
a while back, i asked a question, "why does final fantasy seven suck" which you can find here - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArMt0VN.RIX6p73g9dz8VQMjzKIX?qid=20060901124323AAJyjdj
in there, you'll find my arguements as to why this game wasn't so great.
what made it popular, besides being on a new system (at the time) was that square had such a huge marketing budget from the previous titles - every single sony playstation commercial had FFVII in it somewhere. millions and millions of dollars were spent shoving FFVII down our throats, and kids picked up an RPG that was seriously lacking in gameplay, and were able to beat it and thought they knew how to play RPGs.
many inexperienced gamers started thinking they knew how to play RPGs, despite that many could not hope to play some of the better games that are out there, without help.
also, when other game developers saw that you could severely take away from the battle engines, the item engines, and the story, but still have a game that sells, it paved the way for even more sucky RPGs. games like legend of dragoon are a direct result of copying the suckiness from FFVII
sadly enough, square continued down this path of taking away key parts of games, in FFX - they decided that a world map was useless, and now several other sucky games have followed suit

I've been wondering the same thing myself, so I asked a few friends of mine and pretty much got the, "Cloud's awesome and Aeris is pretty, duh!" answer. Yeah, that's helpful.
I agree that the game had some good characters. Seriously, Sephiroth was probably the best villian of the series (except maybe Kefka, but that's another story). He had the sword, the attitude, and, of course, those creepy eyes.
The story's pretty confusing, but when you think about it, it's actually a very good one. I've also heard from various people that the game was never completely finished when it was released, which may be why the story's confusing at first glance; an incomplete story leaves a lot of unanswered questions.
The biggest reason I think that people love it so much now is due to the release of Advent Children. The movie gave those Popeye-like sprites a new life and voices, and a new story to follow. People fangirl to it now because the characters actually look real and more "pretty," which goes into the whole "you only like games for the scenery, not the story" argument I have with people. :)
Of course, after Advent Children, Square-Enix had to release Dirge of Cerberus, starring Vincent Valentine. And, last I heard, there was a rumor going around about a full remake of Final Fantasy VII. It just never ends.
I'd be happier if they remade something not Final Fantasy-related. Ugh.

that is not likely uncommon, yet by way of introduction infants, Dirge of Cerberus, and disaster center, there are a number of extra modern very final fable followers who weren't followers on the time and subsequently have not got it, yet prefer to play it to end the tale. sturdy difficulty PS1 copies decide for approximately $40 minimum on eBay right now.
