Go for the long-sleeved onsie. Make sure it has an adaquate opening for the head. I swear I don't know how many *cute* things I bought that only had one snap in back or on the shoulder.
The size of 6 months is a good one to buy. Some babies are in that size at about 3 months - either they're a little round or a little long. :-)
Concerning the weather - babies always need to be kept comfortable, and until it's in the 70s a long-sleeved onsie will be great. Were there any vests that would go with it? That's always nice to have around, too.

Babies wear whatever outfit thier parents put on them, which explains some of the really strange baby outfits and the often bewildered look on the babies face....
Yes a baby in New York would wear a long sleeve onsie in 6 months is will be late spring in New York....
Most babies are a little ahead of the growth curve and wear 6 month size clothes aroung 4-5 months so the long sleeved onsie will work out fine...

The way to dress babies is to ask yourself, if you would be hot in it? If the answer is yes then more than likely the baby would too. A long sleeve onesies may be jsut right for New York in spring, or cool summer night.

Babies really only need to be dressed as you are. If you're cold, then the baby will be cold too. If you're hot, the baby will also be hot.
Spring yes, summer no. However, not all babies wear the same size as their age. You never know, at 3 months, the baby may be wearing that 6 month onesie.
Buy it. :)

In spring, yes I would suggest the long sleeved onsie. It's not warm enough to have the baby's arms out, and they would be just as comfortable in it instead of too cold. As for the summertime, if the baby is in an air conditioned home, then long sleeved onsies are fine also.

I'm in Toronto, and while it get's stikin' hot during the day sometimes it gets chilly at night, so they could probably use it.
However, my baby wore 6 month sizes as early as birth, and outgrew almost all by 4 months. At 9 months he is wearing size 18-24 months, so those sizes don't really mean anything,

Yes, if they are someplace with a lot of air-conditioning. My son was always uncomfortable when we went out shopping and whatnot because the a/c made him cold... we found that putting him in long-sleeved and legged onesies made the jaunts easier on all of us!

The baby could wear it at night, because it's cold in New York at night in the spring. And, if the Mom wanted to, she could hem the sleeves--it's easy.
