We know something is not good for us but we still do it, and animals don't have common sense but still don't do things that know will kill them. Can anyone answer me this question, and make sense?

animals do it too, if they have the chance. Haven't you heard of those experiments where the rat pushes the bar for cocaine, instead of the one for food, until it starves to death or has a heart attack?

Humans do things that harm themselves because humans have a trait called impulsivity. Even if we know it's bad, we may still WANT to do it out of curiosity or temptation. Some actions are also based on addiction where we can't help ourselves. Animals learn from their mistakes, but some times make the same mistakes as humans. Example: Insect are drawn to the light even though they die in the process, getting zapped. Basically, humans and animals are the same in many ways.

Interesting thought.

I still think humans are smarter because we make our own choices and so we have more freedom than other animals. Of course you can't speak for everybody. While humans have this intelligence to choose for themselves, it is up to them how to use it. I think this planning has nothing to do with intelligence or common sense but rather with other factors such as laziness or selfishness.

True, a lot of people are self-destructive but we humans have built robots and computers which always do the right thing as in what will yield the greatest benefit for the long-term.

So, humans are far superior to other animals.

Animals have common sense

Animals are not wired like us. We internalize things and complicate things by thinking about things too much. Also, animals do not have mental disorders like people do. Animals respond really well to behavioral interventions (like food as a reward) and humands don't because we think too much and complicate the situation more.

It has nothing to do with their intelligence, it is their LACK of human intelligence that makes them as sensible and non-randomly violent as they are. They are mostly driven by simple emotions and instinct. We are not. We have left most of that behind, and so we suffer the consequences of our heightened self-awareness.

. Humans have the capacity to gain knowledge. When they use this knowledge to benefit themselves or others, this is wisdom. When they disregard this knowledge and do things that they already know can lead to damaging them or others it is called stupidity
