There are random bangs coming from my aluminum air ducts throughout the day and night. They make it very hard to concentrate and to sleep. What could they be? My mom and I just moved into this house in July. Could it be the house settling or something else? Thanks!!

Is the heat on? My ducts bang when the heat is on and the temp change causes them to flex. This might be your problem. :)

With the change in weather, it is not uncommon for air ducting to expand and contract with the temperature change, especially if there is new ducting. More than likely, somewhere a piece of duct work was dented inwards, and the movement of warm air causes it to expand and make a noise.
Other things causing these noises would be varmits, darn little critters, or poltergeists! May you have found Jimmy Haffa!!!

It happened to me too and once we got it fixed now it doesn't make noises. I don't think you should worry about it it's probably the ducts or vents or something like that. Get it checked out if you're concerned. Sometimes it can be deadly too. Like in my house we found out by the experts that there was carbon monoxide coming out of the heaters and stuff so we had to get that fixed right away !!!

All metal ducts are prone to random noises, due to changes in temperatures.

that happened to my neighbor...they were freaked out by it...but I think it was a temperature fluctuation thing that made the ducts and vents make noises...we have chipmunks in our walls sometimes and in the bathroom it sounds really weird.

It might be...dirty? There might be chips banging around but it's probably the vents opening and closing. You'll learn to live with it.

yes, it could be the house settling. but it could be RATS also. with a flash light check to see if there's rat droppings to verify that's what the noises are coming from.
