The person who answered first is on the right track. It is a story that teaches the reader a lesson.

The most famous fable author is Aesop, with fables such as the wolf and the grapes, tortoise and hare (as mentioned earlier), the dog + bone and the water etc.

A fable is a short story to teach the reader a lesson. It's mostly about animals.
e.g. the fable of the tortoise and the hare

Or a fable is a story of supernatural or extraordinary people.
e.g. the fables of gods and heroes

(sorry, no title and author)

What makes a fable unique is that it uses personfication (giving non-human things human-like qualities - animals in this case) to show human weaknesses and teach a moral lesson.
As the others said, the most famous of fables are any by Aesop.
