Dependent is not as "dysfunctional" as co-dependent.

A co-dependent is a person who buys into another person's problems, for example with drinking, drugs, etc. and makes excuses for that person, enables that person to continue his or her destructive habits, and in the process the co-dependent's life revolves in an unhealthy way around the person w/the problems.

Melody Beattie wrote some good books about this subject.
