I'm sick of spending $1.50 each week for a mouse for my snake so I got 2 live mice and am going to kill(humanly gassing them) the babys and feed them to the snake. So far I spent $3.99 each for the adult mice and should get a litter a month with 3-12 babys.

Oh yea, when the babys are big enought for him I plan on putting down the entire litter(maybe keep one so the Mom won't be too upset). The snake eats dead mice, live mice can attack and hurt the snake.

BTW it's a childerns python and will only get 3.5-4 feet long, I have small kids too, so I didn't want a snake that could eat my kids....

well after a couple of months u're gonna hav to start spendin $1.50 again, but u won't be evil, i guess since u're gonna use gas to kill them (might be bad for the snake) and since it's gonna hav more babies...

No thats what they eat. When we had (4)snakes (back in the day) we would buy about four or five mice at a time, then they started having babies. It saved us a lot of money. Just wait until your snake gets so big it has to eat rats, and then chickens. That will get expensive. I used to know someone with a 8 foot burmese 9man that thing had an attitude)

I wouldnt gas the mice, the snake may ingest it and die. OUr snakes ate frozen baby pinkies, but they did fine when we gave them live ones. Snakes can dislocate their jaws to swallow prey, and they can handle it. Believe me, we did it all the time. I would breed the parents then feed those to the snake, before they get to fat. Mice will get weak and die after too many litters (watched it with our best breeder) You can buy new ones every month or so. Then you will have healthy mice to feed your snake. good luck.

Snakes also have the need to squeeze their prey, so this will help the snake well be a snake.

You are not evil- snakes have to eat, and if you are feeding pinkies...he is small and needs to eat a lot.
What type of gas are you talking about? Some kinds can be harmful to the snake. CO2 is ok if you let the mouse sit a while and dissipate it. Any type of the medical gasses can be harmful. Honestly, I just do a quick blow to the head to kill the mouse. I think it is more humane than letting it slowly suffocate from lack of oxygen, but everyone has their own opinons.
I am having breeder mice problems right now- make sure you take the male out once the female is pregnant or he might eat them. My guy ate 3 litters before I figured out what was going on.

Sounds reasonable to me. Obviously... aww, poor babies. But as long as you kill them quickly and humanely, it's a sensible way of doing things I guess. Snakes need to eat. It's good that you're killing them first, too. It's kinder to the mice and safer for the snake. I would consider keeping two breeding pairs and separating the male from the female right after giving birth, though. Give mom-mouse a month break between raising litters. It'd be less stressful and healthier for the mice if they alternately produced snake food, rather than one mouse giving birth without pause.

No, I don't think you're evil. A few weeks ago, I watched my sister's herbatology teacher feed a 1-week old baby mouse to a snake. At first, I was horrified and believed he was evil, but I realized one thing. It's just part of nature. A snake need nutrition, therefore he must eat mice in order to live. As humans, we must eat meat to live. It's a continuous cycle & it's extremely natural.

you are smart, but is $1.50/week that much money? Would the gas be bad for your snake? Is saving a dollar per week worth the weight on your conscience?
oh yeah, also, if you get a litter and you only feed one mouse a week, wouldn't the baby mice become big mice?

No, that's the natural thing to do (not hand feeding the mice to them, but the actual diet of a snake)...that's how snakes survive...plus you're being smart and saving money!

your not evil its just the life cycle. You should keep a male adult mouse and female adult mouse so they can keep mating and making babies so you don't have to spend a lot of money most of the time. You should put a live prey in there, the snake will have more fun...

No your not creul your snake needs to eat and its expensive if you have to spend $1.50 a week. As long as you are ok with gassing them then thats fine. Make sure the gas will not be toxic to the snake though. :D

In all honesty, it's less costly to have a large batch of pre-killed mice shipped to you. We order in bulk with our corns and it comes out to about 60 cents a feeding.

It's must more cost effective than raising your own since you have to supply sanitary conditions and breed responsibly with good quality food and bedding with mice.

The snake will love your consideration for home grown food. The mice have a short life span at least they go quick this way.
