The War of 1812 was fought between the United States of America and the Great Britain and Canadian colonies from 1812 to 1815 on land and sea. The Americans declared war on June 18, 1812.
Realizing it had no chance against the Royal Navy, the Americans planned to seize Canada by land. The war started badly for America as their attempts to invade Canada were repeatedly repulsed, as the American militia proved ineffective and the American high command incompetent until the last year.
The British blockade of the eastern seaboard ruined American commerce, and led to extreme dissatisfaction in New England. The Americans finally gained naval control of Lake Erie and Lake Champlain, preventing a threatened major invasion from the North. The British raided and burned Washington D.C. and parts of Maine. The Americans destroyed the power of the Indians in the Northwest and Southeast, and in the closing days decisively defeated a major British attack on New Orleans. With the defeat of Napoleon in 1814, and the stalemate on the battlefields, both nations agreed to a peace that left the prewar boundaries intact. Canadians remember the war as a victory in avoiding conquest by the Americans, while Americans celebrated a new spirit of national unity.

A correction to ahhchoooo's answer vis a vis the participation of the New England states in the War. They were against War from the outset and it was only towards the latter part of 1813 and into 1814 that they began to get involved. In fact, there was a de facto truce between the New England states and the Canadian Maritimes. One of the lesser known facts about the War is that U.S. merchants played a major role in the ability of the British/Canadians to resist the States. They carried out a booming trade in livestock and foodstuffs without which, Upper Canada surely would have fallen.
If you're interested in this aspect of the War, I'd recommend "Half-Hearted Enemies: Nova Scotia, New England and the War of 1812" by John Boileau.

The war was started by the British act of piracy against an American ship on the high seas. It involved all of the U.S. such as it was then.
A strange twist of fate was that when during the Civil War, the U.S. took two rebels off of a British ship, the cause of the war of 1812 was used to diffuse the sentiment building for England to recognize the rebel government.

properly, there have been surely 2 significant wars on the time. in case you have been American i ought to basically assume you meant the yankee one, yet being British i'm not so specific. the yankee conflict of 1812 became into the human beings as against the British. there became into political stress between the US and Britain, as a results of fairly some territorial disagreements besides because of the fact the reality that Britain became into drafting American sailors. the US invaded Canada, the British invaded the US. however Britain did o.k. in the previous each thing and burnt Washington, D.C., later American victories led to heavy British casualties and finally withdrawal. "The massive call Spangled Banner" became into written bearing directly to the British shelling of Baltimore. the different eu one is a coalition of the British and Russians as against Napoleon, who had conquered a brilliant number of continental Europe. British participation in this conflict is a element of the rationalization they did not shop the conflict stepping into u.s.. As Napoleon became into pushed back, armies from the liberated international places joined this coalition. Napoleon became into at last defeated and sent into exile. Tchaikovsky wrote his well known "Overture 1812" approximately this conflict. It surely lasted longer than 1812, however the Russians call it the "Patriotic conflict of 1812" because of the French invasion of (and defeat in) Russia in that 365 days.

It was the United States against Great Britain. The British had not yet fully accepted that the U.S. was an independent nation, and kept attacking U.S. ships and forcing their crews to serve in the British navy.
