If you are saying:

Where "sqrt" means square root, or as you said, radical sign.

sqrt (y) - sqrt (5) - sqrt (y) =1

If we square everything, which we can do, since this is an equation--both sides are equal, and so we have to do the same to both sides, we will get:

y - 5 - y = 1

-5 = 1

Not defined...there is not a solution here.

Are you trying to solve for y?

... if so...

Square both sides so you get:

(sq rt)(y - 5)^2 - (sq rt)y^2 = 1^2

Simplify to get:

y - 5 - y = 1

Combine like terms (y - y):

-5 = 1

No solution, -5 can never equal 1
