This really depends on whether the roads are paved, unpaved, or non-existant. It also depends on whether your goal is to get across the mountain in the fastest time possible, or to be as certain of making it across as possible. Not to mention whether your goal is to get there in style and luxury, or with the most money in your wallet.
Some cars have great handling on slick pavement, but not enough ground clearance to tackle serious ruts. On the other hand, something like a Jeep Wrangler can crawl through just about anything off road, but is an ill-handling beast on roads (snow covered or not).
