I cannot give you a best antacid. They react differently to individuals. I can only tell you that Prevacid, Prilosec work well for me. Just plain Tums also helps. The best one I ever used was Nexium but is very expensive. Looking forward to the time when they lose their patent on the name.
Baking soda mixed with a glass of water works instantly.
Alka-Seltzer does too.
Avoid using meds containing aspirin if you have a stomach problem.
P.S. If you doctor suggested long term antacids, ask your doctor to be on the safe side. Physicians know what is best to prescribe because they know why it is being recommended.

Tums are not as strong as some but are just as effective and they really have no side effects at all. If its really that bad, increase the amount. And they taste just fine. Good luck.

Papaya enzyme- it's all natural, not chalky and water soluble so you can eat them like Pez if you have to.
I am taking Nexium and it has saved my life. Mine was so bad I literally could not swallow food. You may want to see a doctor. The Papaya stuff is available at health food stores and even Walmart.

After trying different products, both prescription and over the counter, I honestly feel Aciphex is the best prescription med. I've received.
