My son has a relatively cheap electric guitar, and he's flirting with the idea of trying an electric bass. I thought that rather than going out and buying or renting an electric bass that maybe I could just destring his electric and toss on some bass strings (yes, I know there's only four strings).

It might not be perfect, and I'll have to find a way to tune it (my tuner is only for standard six-string tuning) but is there any major reason why it wouldn't work and/or anything to look out for when doing it?

NO!!!! the tuning pegs on the guitar are not strong enough to handle the thickness of bass strings so you won't be able to tune it properly, and it will wreck the guitar...DANGER!!!!
