How are they similiar and how are they different?

Both offer no legal protection for the minority or those having unpopular opinions.

Both can be extremely intolerant of opposing views, and exact violent retribution.

A dictatorship is rule by one individual, and a democracy is rule by a mob.

On the other hand, a republic is based on law, which protects the rights of unpopular minorities and opposing viewpoints.

A democracy supposedly is ruled by the majority. the usa is a republic, in that we vote for people to make our decisions. A dictatorship is solely ruled by one person and he/she is not voted in. they are similar in that if we vote in the wrong person in our republic, he could act as a dictator considering the way he interprets our constitution.

The main difference is that a democratic government can be sent away simply with new elections, if you dislike it ; a dictator can be sent away only with a revolution or a civil war.
