it's a tribal instinct, very basic, those people belong to my troupe, and the others aren't. Chimps have this instinct, and so do humans.

When a child is born, they are a book with blank pages. They have no real concept of colour, race etc. It's up to parents to influence them and guide them on the right path. I think racism starts at home. True not in all cases because people do go on to form their own opinions which might go against everything they were ever taught. I was brought up catholic but have completely rejected the church now. I think if you have a good start in life, the rest is easy. I know with my own children I intend to teach them about different cultures, religions and to have respect for other people. A lot of these hate groups recruit lonely, vulnerable people. To me they are nothing more than cults, using peoples weaknesses to manipulate them and twist their minds. They feel the need to belong somewhere. Yes racism is ignorance but I also think it stems from self loathing too.

I believe so. The average person doesn't care to separate the individual from a collective so they don't ever realize that no matter what a person looks like we are all the same. Not in a way however, that suggests that we are not individuals as well.

Racism is a false pride like sexism, nationalism, and religious intolerance.
Something people use to try and boost their sagging self-esteem.
They think it will make them feel better. But in truth, when they act that
way toward others, it makes them feel more like chit!

Depends on which school of developmental thought you follow. I believe that such behavior is learned, which means that neither of your choices apply. Fear of others not like us appears to be built in...survival instinct? But that is not racism per se.
