the more friction, the less motion, the less friction the more. When you are skating, there isn't a lot of friction between you and the ice. When you are trying to skate in concrete with ice skating shoes, theres a lot of frction

Friction causes a force in the direction opposite the motion of the object and, therefore, causes it to slow down and eventually stop.
