Oh yes! The phrase did not begin with Sheryl Crow's song, because even that song was covered by several different artists before her. The phrase can be taken in many different forms and themes, such as:

Not sure of the exact origin and time of this phrase, but the first time I know of where the concept was given was when Actor Duraid Lahham said in one of his plays ....
اول كف هو بس اللي بوجع، بعدين لو تاكل مية كف ما راح تحس فيهم
(meaning that the first slap on the cheek would hurt but the next 100 slaps won't)

Then many years ago a Russian psychologist made a brilliant experiment concerning this theme, where he placed a group of monkeys in a cage. In the beginning the monkeys kept jumping and fighting trying to escape from the cage. As time passed by they realized that they've been locked up and got really depressed, and got used to their new life in prison. To everyone's surprise, when he opened the cage, the monkeys felt too depressed and too defeated to even leave the cage.

To most people, it basically means the first time it happens will be so mind-numbing that anything else that follows won't ever affect the person as much as that first time.

Yes. The first instance when you are hurt, is the first thing you remember. The pain you associate with it lives with you. Ex. The first time you are dumped after the first relationship you felt loved, or the first death you had occur within your family.

This phrase came from Sherl Crow's song, "The First Cut is the Deepest."

I look at it as a Hardening of ones Heart. First time someone hurt you, it really bad. Then over time we begin to really not care (In a sense). The more hurt we experience the Harder/Colder the Heart becomes to protect ourselves from the emotional pain. We can see this with relationships. The more we have and fail, soon, it just something for our sexual needs. It easier to Divorce and it becomes just a part of moving on to the next person. And marriage just a Social Acceptance for having sex with multiple partners, though it may only be one at a time.

The first time one is hurt, is the most painful. It is the loss of the innocence of youth. We get adapted to pain of life. Not sure of exact origin but it was used by many as a quote and used in rocknroll lyrics.

Ive been a cutter for 12+ years (I'm 26) and only now have i stopped for 6+ mo. and i cant belive it------for me though---my cutting went on undetected for many years----first were more lke deep scratches than cuts-----but, yeah, since then (mostly in the last 4-5 years ) Ive had to get stitches 4 times---which i should have gotten many more times---and an instance where stitches wouldn't help all the way, and had to get stapled up------so----no, the first cut isn't the deepest

it may seem like it but-----GET HELP-----and maybe they wont get deeper, and worsen progressively like as did mine----

theres a program in Chicago, designed especially for helping those who self injure.................when i went i was 24, and had a history of 10 yrs.!!! and there were girls there that were 14, and i couldn't belive they were getting help so early during onset.....its called the SAFE program.....I'm sure they have web-site-----check it out and get help----

also, w/me----if i cut, and it wasn't "as bad as the last time" id call it an armatures job, and be even more disappointed then i was in myself to begin with..............so----get help------and ask for it if you can, i know its hard, but it hurts the ones u love more than u know----------
