I'm getting an eletric guitar and amp for christmas. I'm gonna be learning from the lessons on comcast on demand, my friend is gonna be teaching me, and my dad's friend is gonna be teaching me.

How long will it take to learn how to play? Should I do some other things to help me learn?

My friends have always said I should play. A while back one of them said I had the perfect finger to play guitar.

I have played for 13 years, and i would just tell you to expose yoursekfto other music that is outside of your comfort zone, watch alot of other guitarists, even if their solos are friggin insane, and also get yourself exposed to other intruments beides the guitar and never be afraid to try something new.

Don't expect to be playing very well for quite some time. Also, DON'T give up. Everything takes time to do well, it took me YEARS to be able to play halfway decently (I had to teach myself everything). You should start to stretch your fingers now, and train yourself to isolate your fingers. I use a gripmaster finger exerciser. You can probably get one at any music store, or maybe on line. When using the finger exercisers, remember to use the tips of your fingers and not the bottoms of them.
good luck with your new guitar.

well, as with anything, you are never completely done learning. there are always gonna be new things in guitar. just keep practicing, and never ignore the scales! especially if you plan on writting songs.

it's gonna take a while to get all the chords down and get comfortable with the finger placing....strumming is another thing but once you can change chords right you should be on you way...if you practice alot it should be a couple of weeks...like me.

if you really put effort into it you can be playing some songs on from the third to fifth. well, maybe you can be able before or later than that, it all depends on how much you put into it.
well, good luck, any questions feel free to email me
