Because it is worse to experiment on people. Only animals have complex enough systems to model what happens in people without using people.

Yes this is a sad part of science. It has do deal with ethical issues like this. I mean I do feel bad for the animals because I love them.
We would have no knowledge or understanding about the natural world as we are now without the contribution of these living organisms. But there are scientists who don't use animals in their experiments such as plant biologists, paleontologists, etc...
Maybe we should ask "why do humans eat animals?"

In reviewing the previous answers, it seems that everyone is approaching this from either an ethical / moral or a utilitarian standpoint, and ignoring the obvious.
Scientists experiment on animals because it's a real hoot!

It's wrong, but it's the best way to find out what is going on in our world. A lot of cures and advancements have been made for the human race. but at the cost of poor animal lives.

i did a debate on this in grade school. I was pro-animal testing and my debate team won by a landslide. The clincher was would you rather see a monkey with skin irriation from makeup or rather have boils all over your face from makeup that was not tested? And I dont know if you are one of those animal activists but when i get older and start producing makeup from acids and house cleaners and it needs to be tested, you can be the first its tested on.

it may be horrible, and i completely dissagree with it. scientists experiment on animals to see if a product is unhealthy. this is unfair, and it is best to try products not tested on animals.
By the way, WE ARE ANIMALS TOO!!! we should respect them.
