Yeah you do need a router.
You can have a complete wireless network (Both computers/laptops have a wireless network card) or a mixture of wired and wireless connection. The last option depends whether your router has both those facilities.

No problem, just get a router, but has you old machine got wireless?, if not it won't work unless you connect it to the router by cable, or get a wireless card for it also

To "split" your internet connection, you need to purchase one of the many wireless routers out there. They start at around $39.99. The primary differences are speed, so make sure to ask the representative you are buying from for advice so that you get the most speed for a price you are comfortable with.

When it comes to setup, follow the instructions and if you have any trouble, contact your internet service provider.

The best way is through a wireless router. If all devices on the network have wireless/wifi/802.11[b/g], then a wireless router is best since you won't need to have network cables running through your house. I personally have never had any problems with my Airport Express from Apple. (The Airport Express works with any device that has 802.11b or 802.11g.)

Connect your existing PC to a wireless modem router, such as the Netgear DG834G, using the network port and the cable supplied with the Netgear, and then you can connect your laptop to it wirelessly.

It's easy with the Windows XP network setup wizard.

You just need to disable the DHCP of your DI-524 and let your main router be your DHCP server. if your main router doesn't have a DHCP server. then set a static IP address to both computers. make sure that the DI-524, laptop and desktop are on the same network range.

A wireless router is probably the ideal solution.

I've used them since they first came out, and they're great.

For a while I had a couple of desktops wired into my broadband, along with several notebooks.
