You should look for something simple with flexible hours so it will not interfere with school. If you enjoy reading, try getting a job at a book store as a cashier. You will learn the lessons of making your own money, you will have responsibilities at your job which will make your dad proud, and also... you would get a discount on books!

The same applies to everything. If you enjoy movies, get a job at a theater, or a rental place.

If you enjoy cooking/eating get a job at your favorite restaurant.

The fact of the matter is, at 16, unless you start your own company, you will most likely not be getting offers to come work at IBM, or Yahoo. Your dad just wants you to get the experience of your first job.

The most important thing about a job (and this will hold true your whole life) is to make sure it is something you enjoy doing.

Good Luck!

obviously go to local stores. best thing is where you like to shop, that way you can get a discount (most places is at least 20% off) on what you already buy!
DO NOT... I repeat DO NOT do those online survey things like cash crate. They are a big scam and a rip off. It takes 2 hours to fill 1 survey out and you get like $1 for it! Alot of things you have to PAY to GET paid the higher amounts or you have to be at least 18 to sign up for credit cards! The people that push them are getting paid by them to do that!

Have you tried to local grocer stores? How about the dress shops? What about the big box stores such as Tesco, Wal Mart, Target etc? What about the Pet shops if you like animals? But in all you are going to have to get you parents consent because of your age.

Whatever you do, don't work food service. My first job was at Mcdonalds and it suuuuucks. Find a place that fits your personality and that you would enjoy doing. Do you have a favorite clothing store? Maybe you could work there.

This is a legit way to make extra cash,it doesn't cost you anything, and
I believe you only have to be 13 as well. You get paid to take online
surveys, and its good money, plus you get money from referrals,20% of
what they make, and 10% of what the referral's referral makes.I joined
in Oct.,and earned $234 in October alone. The best part is, they mail
you a check the beginning of every month. It takes around 30 sec.
to sign up.

Work somewhere like Denny's where it's open at night after school. It also has free food, which would elminate you wasting more time in preparing dinner or eating on weekends at home.
