Can you give me some names and phone numbers of people you did a roofing job?
Do you have insurance and give me a copy of your policy? [a must]
Need a written contract on what you are going to do and a list of materials for us. "this is a must" Make sure he signs it and you also. Make sure you have a copy of it.

You need to find out if you have more than one roof on it. If you have more than one layer you will have to do a tear down because 3 is too heavy for a roof. It's very costly to do the roof so get some estimates from 3-4 roofers. If they tell you they need to take the gutters off that's just so you will buy new gutters from them.

ask a roofer, it's hard work to re due the roof on your own. Moving 50-80 pounds of shingles with a ladder. call some to fix it

Visit the national roofing contractors website. They have a helpful tool to help find a qualified roofer in your area.

Ask if they are going to take off old shingle's or go over old application
ask for warrantied shingle's ( 20 to 30 year)
ask if bid include's any roof board replacement
DO NOT alway's take low bid you are most safe with mid bid
if you live in a colder climate ask for roof edge -roof dam this is a more durable under-layment on the downward edge of roof
ask for ref. and insur.
never pay for whole job befor total satisfactory completion however it is not wrong to be asked for a partial payment to start

Ask them how much they charge per "square". one square equals 10 feet x 10 feet square. It's best to use high quality materials, reason being; it will last longer. Get several estimates and choose to your liking. Most likely they will measure your roof. If you have shingles make sure they clean their area up using a strong magnet to remove the roofing tacks out of your yard.

ask if they will use a nailer or hammer and roofing nails.
A nailer is faster, but shingles are more secure with the old-fashioned nails
