Just wondering if someone could give me some tips please? I'm not musical at all... and know nothing about the guitar!

From a complete novice!

Cheers!

First off you need to own a guitar. Preferably an acustic because it is hard to play. But this will get you acustomed to playing and when you get an electric you'll sound twice as good as you did with the acustic. Second, you need to find a bunch of books about guitars. Third get a bunch of books about chords and stuff. After you know the chords and how to bend and stuff then you could start rocking out and learning the guitar solo to Free Bird. (If you've never heard Free Bird it's by Lynyrd Skynyrd). yes that's the right spelling).

Buy a simple chord book with guitar tablature and learn simple songs. Find a mate to play along with because it makes so much difference when you're playing with someone.
Just pick it up and get to know the different sounds and listen for the different tonal qualities and after a while it will be second nature.
Good luck

I bought my fella a guitar for his birthday 2 months ago.. he has used DVD's & Help books for the chords but he did advise that once he'd learnt the chords, the books/DVD's were boring as they don't play songs..

This is the worse form of learning to play an instrument, why don't you get a tutor or join a club?
