As the previous answerer said, the media plays a big role in portraying what girls today should look like. I believe this trend, at its roots, though, is due to our changing culture of a "fat" America. Centuries ago, when the poor didn't have enough to eat and the rich feasted, it was considered beautiful to have some meat on your bones because it was RARE to be curvy. However, now it's the other way around; those who don't have enough money are forced into unhealthy lifestyles, like eating McDonald's, since it is cheaper, while the rich pay extra for organic or "healthy" foods. Thus today, the rich and famous are skinny because it is more difficult - and we all want to be what we're not! And so, the media shows us these rich, famous, skinny people, and we all want to emulate them.

Girls, especially young girls, are especially affected by the media because when they're developing, tweens/teens usually have lower self-esteem because they are not yet comfortable with their changing bodies.

Just my two cents :).

I think the obsession with being skinny is at least partially caused by the media. It promotes thinness as equaling beauty, which isn't necessarily true, especially to the level of thin they take it. There are many young girls in the U.S. that go to extreme measures, like eating disorders, to obtain the body of a celebrity they like. People focus so much on how obesity is unhealthy, and it is, but pay no mind to the negative effects of being very underweight. The dangers of both ends of the spectrum should be shown. I myself just want a body that's healthy.

I would much rather be curvy than skinny. I don't want to look like a little boy with no chest and no hips!

Many girls today strive to be as thin as possible because that's what the media tells us is beautiful. Models and actresses are impossibly thin, and we see their images everywhere! We're told that they are the ideal of feminine beauty, and we read magazines full of tips on how we can look more like them. We're told that any fat is unhealthy, and that we must constantly weigh ourselves, diet, and squeeze ourselves into the smallest, skimpiest clothing possible.

The skinny-curvy thing just goes around in cycles, I guess. Nowadays most people think that if you're curvy, you're fat, which is considered ugly these days.
