my 92' ranger will only go into gear when truck is off, i can start it in gear and drive like that but when i put the clutch in to change gear it is stuck in first until i shut it off and start it in another gear. what does this mean?

Sounds like you either need to replace or adjust the clutch. Most likely it will need a new clutch. However if you do it correctly you can change gears between the forward gears by gauging your engine speed. It's called speed shifting. DON'T try to force it into next gear but when you have engine speed correct it should SLIDE from one gear to the next. Hope this helps. D

Check your clutch fluid level. It's likely low, or you need a clutch replaced.

comparable answer as shger64, hydraulic snatch. this is on the drivers area firewall. this is low on fluid, in case you had your snatch replaced at the instant, i could take it back to the situation that did the artwork and tell them, it won't be doing that. Use DOT 3 brake fluid to fill the reservoir. careful with spills, those issues will eat your paint.

Sounds like the differential is really screwed up and needs major work if it won't engage while the engine is on. Take it to the shop, dude.
