And if you acheive this in a way that benefits the treasury, say by filling the car first before driving of Beachy Head or by smoking 40 a day for 30 years, would that ease your consience over that huge great carbon footprint you leave behind by getting out of bed in the morning. (actually that big bad carbon footprint you leave just by being alive)

Sorry all and thanks Barry, thats the point I was really trying to make.
The latest jolly wheeze they're found to potentially tax us is on is our alledged carbon footprint. If I promise to die at 60 can I be tax exempt!

There are different kinds of social responsibility. We live in a society that treats people only as a means not an ends; we focus on money and objects. However, old people truly are resources for the family, with wisdom, oral histories and... as harsh as it sounds... childcare. We should value older people more. Anyway, your questions is written as if the most socially responsible thing we can do is to never have been born at all. Which is a fine viewpoint, but has nothing to do with the elderly.

Age itself has nothing to do with whether you are still worth the air you breathe. Some people have never been, and probably never will be, worth the air they breathe, much less their total resource use.
I do think that in a time where death can be indefinitely postponed beyond the end of real life, it is becoming a personal moral choice when to die. For most people, that will amount to deciding whether the expense of another bypass is justified compared to treating a couple thousand children for ear infections. Maybe it is, perhaps you are essential personnel to your society and your family, perhaps you are still having lots of fun... Perhaps not. You can stay marginally alive forever.
The guts to know when you are already dead may be a new demand of social responsibility.

Its probably a good idea because all the pension funds are being stolen, or have already been stolen, by the Republicans. United Airlines, for example--the workers got nothing, the executives got $25 million a piece. Hey, its what you voted for in 2000 and 2004. Just keep working. You earned it.

Our society is probably the only one that doesn't respect it's elderly. I would hate to think I am a burden on our "social society", just because I aged and my body won't cooperate anymore. I would love to die before becoming a burden to MY FAMILY.....as society can go blow, but since that probably won't happen, I hope I raised my children good enough for them to want to take care of me, the way I took care of them when they needed their diapers changed and fed and bathed.

Younger people seem to forget that the older generation paid tax, quite high tax at that, contributing to the family allowance to help bring them up. It seems nowadays it was money wasted.
