G'day,
Uni of Melb... Parkville, Carlton, Fitzroy, Brunswick, North Melbourne, and even in the city itself.
You may also want to visit the link that I provided on the bottom from the uni's website. Hopefully it helps a bit as well.
Good luck.

Carlton, North Carlton, Parkville and Brunswick have the easiest public transport to Melbourne Uni (Sydney Rd tram and Lygon Street tram). Fitzroy and North Fitzroy are reasonably close if you have a bike or like to walk, but the East-West commute to Melbourne Uni isn't as easy as the North-South.
All pretty fun areas, and there are lots of share houses and flats.

I guess it all depends on the type of scene you are looking for and your budget
but from your description i suggest an inner city area such as
Carlton , Brunswick, Flemington, Kensington, Collingwood, Fitzroy , Richmond, North Melbourne, South Yarra
or go near the beach at Port Melbourne , South Melbourne , St Kilda , Elwood
- these areas all have good public transport
There is a shortage of good rental properties at the moment so the competition is fierce,
check out

to get an idea of the cost of rent and type of properties available
good luck

It truly relies upon on what you're searching for for in regard to what's the right for you. when you're unmarried and searching for most nightlife, then inner suburbs are the bypass. Tho i imagine the nightrider buses (which go away the city after useless night and virtually follow the prepare line) nonetheless are going so residing extra out isn't any genuine problem that way. In each and each and every suburb there are the coolest and undesirable parts, although the probabilities do variety. condo and residing house expenditures do variety besides. and obviously they havent considered the more advantageous salubrious bits of Broadmeadows. frequently the eastern suburbs must be suggested to be the "more advantageous suited" component to Melbourne. South East arising. Northern and Western "poorer". the interior suburbs all have their personal pros and cons and each and each and every have their eye-catching parts. the perfect way is to have a glance for your self and word what suits and appeals to you. good luck and function relaxing ask your self why Apple A thinks Ringwood is a hollow .... LOL It covers a large section and has its very wealthy parts besides as not so wealthy and has all centers, even though it truly is their opinion.

If your budget doesn't extend to the inner suburbs, there are places like Nothcote and Thornbury which are about 5 - 6 kms from the CBD and which will be cheaper than Carlton/Fitzroy/Brunswick. Also serviced by good public transport - train line and two tram lines. One tram line goes straight through the very popular Brunswick (some great nightlife there).
Clifton Hill is another area you might look at. - close, trams and trains.

look for something around albert park/middle park. it's got convenient public transport to the city, and it's near the beach.
