If you’re a Windows user you need an Anti-Virus. I DO NOT recommend the current top sellers: Norton Anti-virus or McAfee. They’re bloated and less effective than others.
The best commercial anti-virus is NOD32 from Eset. It’s relatively inexpensive and has a 100% effective rating from the Virus Bulletin.

Hello,
As an IT veteran of over 12years (I used to work in the computer industry and am trained to MCSE level). and having worked as a systems administrator for a while. I have tried many of the most popular desktop anti virus programs such as Norton 2002, McAfee, Computer Associates, AntiVir and so forth.
I'm presently still using AVG free several years on after removing the dreaded Norton AV.
**I highly rate AVG Free version 7.5 (latest version) this program is excellent, it has saved my machine many times over from intenet born viruses, has daily free updates, has a user friendly interface, resident shield protection, inbound & outbound email scanning, comprehensive help system with clear instructions, and an online virus refernce liberary. Virus vault for quarentining of virus infections,etc,etc.
10 out of 10 its excellent and you could pay alot of money for somethng much poorer in my opinion.
AVG Free is available from http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_downl.htm

Ryan is right. You should not use a antivirus program that is not to popular. Virus creators usually have the big stuff like norton and McAfee. So you should get a Virus Program that is not to popular.

McAfee.
Doesn't let anything through.
I tested it once by clicking on a e-mail which I knew had a virus attached. McAfee put up a pop-up window advising me that it contained a virus and not to open it. Even if I wanted to open it, McAfee wouldn't let me.
Used Norton, not only did it let a virus in but crashed my computer.

If you are concerned about the security of your pc, and if you are not that pc expert, and if you download lots of software and use peer-to-peer stuff, then you MUST install Norton/MacAffee Internet Security 2006 or 2007. They will slow your pc down but that is price of total comprehensive security.

The best anti virus is Nod32 by a company called Eset. But its not free and its not user froiendly. Its used by big companies who really can't afford to get a virus or lose data.
For home users there are several free options that are better than Norton.
You need to install one firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out.
http://www.zonelabs.com Zone Alarm firewall OR
http://www.comodogroup.com/ - Comodo firewall.
You need to install one anti virus;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus
You need all three anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Also use Microsoft Defender and their online scans.
And these are useful utilities;
http://www.mozilla.com/ - Firefox web browser.
http://www.ccleaner.com Cr*pcleaner Registry cleaner and privacy tool
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.
http://www.winpatrol.com
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
http://www.siteadvisor.com -MacAffee Site Advisor warns about malware on sites you are about to visit.
http://spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm - The Spyware Warrior site identifies fake anti spyware programs.
https://www.grc.com - Shields Up security site, check your firewall works.
Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

I like Kaspersky cause it updates it virus definition several times a day. The other progams mentioned by others are fine too. My two cents worth. Chow
