I seem to remember hearing this in an episode of the Animated Adventures of the Derek and the Dominos... Is it true he thought that his original name 'Eric Pond' was not 'showbiz' enough but then saw a London Bus heading to Clapton Pond and decided that 'Eric Clapton' had more of a 'ring-a-ding' to it?

I can't find any evidence on the internet of that. According to wikipedia, he was born Eric Patrick Clapton.

His maternal grandparents, who brought him up, had the surname of Clapp. His grandmother had previously been married to a man called Clapton though, and during this time gave birth to Eric's mother. This is where the confusion about Eric's real surname comes from, but therefore is, in fact, Clapton.
