Typically diversity is used in the sense of having a team of people from mutiple religious/cultural/ethnic/country of origin backgrounds.

managing diversity means, moving towards the common goal with common beliefs regardless of differences.

Diversity is the variety and difference between individuals. Keep in mind that this does not refer to just ethnic groups differences. It goes into greater detail like special needs, learning capabilities, etc.

Assuming you refer to diversity policies then carla has the answer - it is the recognition that everyone in a working team or any group brings different skills and weaknesses arising from ethnicity, religion, genetics, upbringing, experience, etc. So simply labelling people as French or Muslim or black is pointless and unhelpful in building understanding and co-operation
