I need to lock certain applications on my computer and certain things in control Panel, my son cant help but fiddle with settings and open programs that I need for work that I dont want him to.

I would prefer to use things built into XP and not download programs, if I had to do that it would be nice if it was free and virus free.

Any Ideas????

Im running XP Home Ed

Your best option would be give your son a personal account by making one in the control panel. Not only will this give him a bit of freedom and personal space on the PC, but if you password your original account and not make his the administrator, than he won't be able to tinker with the settings on it.

If you were running XP Pro, this would be easy.

With XP Home, you only have two levels of user built in (as you don't want to download anything), which is limited or administrator.

Therefore, there's really only one easy thing you can do, create your son another user login via control panel/users and make him a limited user.

Note, even this won't stop him accessing certain things he shouldn't, but it's all your got given the limited scenario described.

Or, upgrade to XP Pro, the tools are built in.

or simply buy him computer, as should he be using your work PC, it's perhaps asking for trouble?

Since you have Windows XP, I would put a password on your username and create a Guest account if you have not already done so.

You can try this by going into Control Panel and clicking on User Accounts. Then just click on "Turn on Guest account." After you do that, log into the Guest account and delete any shortcuts on the Desktop or in the Start menu just to be safe.

give your son his own id,,,, make yourself the administrator.. then he can have his own settings.... go to the control panel and click on user accounts,,,,,, as administrator you would be the only one who could change certain things,,,, i'm not sure if you can choose which applications he can use,, but it is worth a try..... also you could also make some of the files/files hidden so he cant see them that my curb his desire to fiddle with things since he cant see them....also also,,,,, most files can be passworded or made read only..... that will give you a little more control....

hope this helps..... good luck.

It really does depend on the operating system you are running, with Vista there is an option to lock in the start menu, same goes for 2000 and NT if I recall correctly, for a system running XP or 9x, you could always set a password protected screensaver, hope this was of help

You can open a new account and protect it with pass word.Go to control panel and open user account. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

First you need to set up a user account for yourself and your son. Set up his account as a limited user account. That way he can logon under his account mess all he wants with his setting but nothing he does can change your settings. Make sure your account is the administrator account and is password protected.

Start>Settings>Control panel>user accounts...

Don't forget your logon password. LOL
