I just got a new laptop with a wireless connection but the company I work for does not have a wireless router. This is the best I can describe the network: They have several switches connected to a fortinet firewall and they use windows 2003 server. I think they have a T1 line for internet, not sure on models of the routers and switches. I need to be able to use my laptop as if I was wired to the network, need internet and server connections. I have a Linksys WRT54G Router that I use at home, can I use something like that on my work network? What about a WAP? (We don't have an IT person anymore and he left the network in a very bad way, any help would be appreciated! btw, I do have access to all passwords and things for the current network, I'm just not sure the best way to describe what we have.) I need to know the best location (i.e. before firewall, after router) to connect the wireless router, and what configurations I need to make it work.

Very easy.

First : Purshase your wirless router
Second: replace your wrired router with your wireless router
Plug your cat5 into the back of your new wireless
the same way you had it on your wired router.
Most wireless routers comes with an installation CD I recommend using it.

You can also use the gateway installation address which should start with 192.1 etc.. the full address should be in your
manual who comes with the CD installation.

I recommend WEP it is easier . WAP is more secure but requires more time to setup , also WAP sometimes requires more troubleshooting. I will go to WEP and change WEP password every 3 months.

If you have any issue feel free to email me at : julien4_2000@yahoo.com

A wireless access point (WAP) is the way to go. Unless you know exactly what you're doing, don't mess around with the current network architecture! You'll bring the whole thing down and your name will truly be MUD. For the sake of your job, do NOT follow the advice of others to replace your current router/firewall with a wireless one! That might be OK for a home network but will NOT work with a business network in most cases.

Connect it directly to your network -- any available network port will suffice. Locate it as closely as possible to the area where you need wireless coverage. Enable encryption to keep your network secure. WPA is preferred to WEP, but WEP is better than nothing. If you must go with WEP, make up your own passkey and change it monthly or more often.

Follow the instructions that come with the WAP to install it and set it up. It will need an IP address on your current subnet to get access to the management page though it will function without one. You need to get to the management page to set up encryption so do NOT skip that step.

Hi, First you are going to need a wireless router before you can do anything. I just hooked one up and mine is a D-Link wireless router. I unhooked my Lynksys cable/dsl router, and just hooked this one up. At work, I dont know what to tell you though.
