I have to write a paper comparing two of his short stories and discussing his use of horror and suspense. What two short stories maybe have some similarities and would give me plenty to compare and write about?

"The Cask of Amontillado" is his best, I think. The author walls up someone else alive and leaves them for dead, but what is going to happen is not revealed very early on. The author is never caught. The horror comes from the ease at which the victim is caught, and the heartlessness of the author.

In "The Tell-Tale Heart," the author kills an old man, and you know about it from the beginning, but that is not where the suspense comes from. The author is caught by his own insanity, which is where the suspense comes from. It is horrible because the author kills a man he loves because of how his bad eye looks, and then thinks he isn't fully dead. His crime is nearly perfect. Except for the weakness of will, no one would have known.

The Purloined Letter and The Masque of the Red Death

The Purloined Letter is really the only detective story that Poe wrote, while The Masque is his traditional horror story. That difference is a good start in the contrasting area of the paper if there is one.
