Ask your instructor for a piece of Mg ribbon. Wearing goggles and gloves and using tongs, hold about a 3 inch strip of Mg in a Bunsen burner flame until the Mg ignites. The reaction is: 2Mg (s) + O2 (g) ----> 2MgO (s) MgO (s) is a white solid that crumbles easily. If you add the solid to some water, it forms a basic solution of Mg(OH)2 that you can check with litmus. MgO + H2O ---> Mg(OH)2 (basic as in milk of magnesia)
