$50-$75. Don't go to the department stores. Many of the girls working behind the cosmetic counter were hired just like the women/men behind the clothing counters. I've worked at Dillard's, Nordstrom's, and Penney's and even though some of the women have experience, most of them don't and you will come out looking like a clown!!!

The artists at the MAC counter will show you how to correctly apply your makeup. I believe they charge 35 dollars, but that amount is applied toward the cost of the makeup you are (definitely) going to want to buy. I would start with MAC because it is a quality product, and it costs a bit less than Lancome or Estee Lauder.

Is it for a special occasion or to teach you how to do makeup? Most department stores have cosmetic counters that will teach you for free.....of course, they expect you to buy the product, but the makeover is free.
For a special occasion, I would say no more than 25 or 30.

There is no need to pay for a make-over.
Just go to a major department store's cosmetics department. Most of the "lines" offer complimentary make-overs.
It is customary to purchase one or more of the products that were used - if you are happy with the results.
Caution: Be sure the make-up artist uses either new or cleaned brushes and sponges. The brushes should be cleaned with alcohol. The use of new testers are also adviseable - if possible.

Try going to M.A.C, I got my make-up done for my b-day and they didn't charge me a thing unless you want to buy something or tip the make-up artist. You can ask her/him tons of questions and they really do know a lot about makeup. Even if you not getting your makeup done they will be more than happy to answer any makeup questions.(I mean that's their job) ;)
