I think because through American history a certain percentage of Black blood meant you were Black. That was to keep all the slave owners kids on the plantation.

I have two mixed adult children and one of them checks off the black box and the other checks the other box. It is their decision as to what they consider themselves. As to what others consider them, yes there was a time when the "one drop rule" was the norm and so even if you had a fractional amount of "*****" blood, you were a "*****" whether you wanted to be or not. Another reason is because white America, not all inclusive for those sensitive people who think I might be singling them out, has a tendency to want to label anything "impure" as having nothing to do with them. I still know white people who are adamant about denying that I have put "*****" blood into our family line. Big F'n Deal. I think it's about time we quit worrying about labels. It seems irrelevant.

Because if you appear even remotely Black, that is the one aspect of your identity people jump on. It means you have SOME Black blood in you and, thus, you should automatically identify with that part of your heritage bc, otherwise, you are ashamed of yourself. It's kind of sad, really.

Because of the racist "one-drop rule". According to the white slavemaster hundreds of years ago, if a person had one drop of Black blood in them, then they were Black.

Becuz all these racist white people will look at them as black regardless. Most black people have something in there blood, either its Indian or White. Due to the white masters raping so many black slaves. So you have to look at most people as mixed, and due to the Indians being thrown around all over the place blacks and indians mingled, as well.

normally because their skin is darker and people automaticly percieve them to be black. its probally easier to say they are black than to list out everything they are mixed with. Like anyone who is half/half (or mixed more than that) and looks more like one race than the other.
I knew a girl who was half black and half white. she always said she was black, but that was because her white father abandoned her and her mother, so she felt no connection with that part of her.
my bf's sister is half/half I don't know what she would declear herself as or if she hanges out with more white or black people.

They are actually considered mulatto. And depending on where they live sometimes they aren't accepted by either race. Stupid people, don't they realize hate has no place in today's society?
