During Colonization most of the powerful European nations like Britain, France, Spain, Portugal and even Belgium and the Netherlands wanted to flex their muscles and prove to the world that their nation was the world's apex. The more land they colonized the greater the opportunity to take natural resources from the Americas and Africa which had an abundance of useful resources like gold, spices, tobacco and many others. They resources were sold and increased the nation's productivity growth and overall economy. It was a race for strength.

Are they still indirectly doing this? Not sure. In Iraq, they're committed because Tony Blair realized that America and Britain are very close allies and its relationship has won two world wars so there is a strong brotherhood among those nations. If they were, it wouldn't suprise me because powerful nations always look to increase its strength.
