What a wide and wonderful question.

Nuclear power provides clean, pollution free power. True there are problems with disposal at present but science has already discovered ways of reducing half life and like everything else, science makes more and more discoveries. If the same amount of coal has been used to generate electricity as the current nuclear reactors the world would already be in serious if not terminal problems!

Fussion power promises almost limitless, extremely cheap, pollution free energy but that is many years down the line yet.

Radiological health treatments offer tremendous hope in curing and treating cancer and illnesses.

Radiological instruments find faults in engineering structures preventing disasters.

Nuclear weapons also have a benefit in peace although peace campaigners perhaps cannot see it! When faced with the ultimate weapon the political minds are focused and forced to think clearly and logically. They cannot afford a nuclear war. If it was still bows and arrows, guns and grenades war would be a much easier option to contemplate!

Like all discoveries nuclear has many very positive things to offer society. It is only miss-use that causes problems and the world is full of people who have died and will continue to die from bullets, knives and arrows!!

Two types: fission and fusion.

Fission is used in nuclear power plants and to power nuclear submarines. It was once thought that it could be used to blast channels for new waterways, but it was found too dangerous for that.

Fusion is not economical yet. It still costs more than it is worth to try and use it to produce electricity.
