Good question. Maybe there was a movement a few decades ago, or within the last century, that sort of "glorified" it in the sense of architecture with the likes of Mies Van Der Rohe (sp?), among others...as well as other areas. New York City tends to have more visitors from other countries, likewise with LA...I think...
They say Phoenix is on the verge of a cultural movement like Chicago had some time ago.

9/11 happened and NYC became America's City. L.A.'s easy filmmakers are already there and they don't have to pay to be shipped to a location. The Break Up was set in Chicago. But I understand where you're coming from, Married with Children, Oprah, and other shows were set in Chi-Town durning the 80's and 90's. I wouldn't be suprised if a new CSI pops in Chicago, though.

Chicago's popularity was at one time defined by the "mob" and by illegal liquor sales and production. When organized crime died back and drinking became legal, Chicago lost some of it's negative glitz. But not to worry, it's still one of the 3 major cities in the USA.

Chicago re-identified itself after the democratic convention riot of the 60's. It became more mainstream middle America losing most of its theatrical ambiance in the process. Chicago was most known for its "bad boy" reputation and with the demise of the prominate Mafia, the rich of the east turned elsewhere for their thrills.

unless you travel constantly and make a major point of continually soaking up culture in all its forms it is usually only the attitude with which yo land at O'Hara that determines how you feel at any given time. We all seems to rely on sound bits for our info and one media group or another convinces us of their superiority in that are. Cultural significance is such a wide all encompassing thing that it is difficult to weight it between destinations at any given minute.

Chicago couldn't handle being "the windy city" anymore, so it packed up and moved to Arizona

chicago is just a go between city. it is still a major transit city. perhaps its politicians are just not doing a good job with encouraging the tourist industry.
