Scholastic has some great resoures. I have a book that called "Ready-To-Go Writing Lessons that Teach Key Strategies" and it comes for grades 1-3 and also 4-8. Another good resource is by Teacher Created Materials, Inc., and it is called "Using the Six-Trait Writing Model". It comes in primary and intermediate levels. Another great book by Teacher Created Materials, Inc. is called "Jumbo Book of Writing Lessons".
Hope that helped a bit and good luck!

I just did this last week and it was a huge success. "The Mysteries of Harris Murdock" by Chris Van Allsburg (I think I have the title right, lol) has an illustration, a title, and a caption on each page. That's it. You can have your students choose one of those illustrations and captions and create an entire story out of it. My class chose "Just Desert." The illustration is of a woman lowering a butcher knife onto a glowing pumpkin. The kids were incredibly excited about it, and they came up with loads of different story ideas. This lesson can work on ANY level in which students can write entire stories (I'd say 3rd grade up to college), and you can use it to focus on a concept your class needs help in. I used it to focus on brainstorming and choosing descriptive words when writing.

Best wishes for whatever you decide.

make a game out of it.

call two kids up to the board, and give them the same word to write.
who ever writes it fastest and correct wins something...

This is pretty wide-open. What age level? What type of writing?
